this is interesting MANIK, thanks for the provocations. But i'm going
to pretend that you're really trying to be critical here.
OK, launch into slightly aggravated tone:
"Come on, MANIK… you've got to be kidding me.
You're equating someone disagreeing with you on a list serve to a KKK
attack is just plain irresponsible and insulting. You want to get all
upset about me not knowing a certain political context? Try being a
little more savvy about your own extra-cultural references. While all
the things you mention are certainly important, who here is claiming
absolute knowledge about something (other than you that is). Pulling
your archive of an old email thread and showing me receiving a link
someone sent in is supposed to be some kind of indictment? Really? And
you feel justified and even adequate to throw around various contexts
(xenophobia in Europe, institutional racism in the US, etc) to make
your point (whatever that may be)? And what argument did I ever have
with your use of "Shiptar" - i confess to know nothing about this
matter, and don't recall ever saying anything about it before.
And, i don't know… i'm not always happy with my life, but i wouldn't
call it miserable. though i think most of us are in for some rough
times ahead.
Anyway, if you're point is to keep your earlier posts about
Serbia/Kosovo in the mix of our discussions, that's great. i'm sure i
can learn more about what you're saying. But can't you do so without
flailing about so much? Why is everyone assumed to be your enemy?
And by the way, i'm not in NYC, and don't use heroin."

the ASCII hyperlinked dogs are great.
take care,
ryan

Hi all
I had a long debate here awhile back, somewhat
acrimonious I recall, with Manik, about their use of
the racist term "shiptar" for Albanians. ( & I can't
be bothered to go into it all again here -it's all on
record, for anyone who cares to look
http://rhizome.org/print/?23606
http://rhizome.org/print/?23595
http://rhizome.org/print/?24013
& for "shiptar" see note 41 here
http://hrw.org/reports/2005/serbia1005/4.htm#_ftn41
).
It's unfortunate that their somewhat splenetic (&
often spot on) critique of the US/Britain/NATO is
marred by this. It makes it difficult to take anything
they say *politically* entirely seriously.
On the other hand honesty compels me to say I think
they are interesting , original & worthwhile
artists…
I suspect that many on this list would actually be
relatively sympathetic to some of the points they have
made here ( not all; the ad feminem- I just made that
up, I think!- attack on Marisa is, I think, entirely
uncalled for)& it's really not a very effective
political tactic to attack those who are actually
predisposed to be sympathetic to you - where I grew up
we had a saying -"Don't shit on your own doorstep".
Declaration of interest: Manik recently posted a nice
note on my vlog. I took it as something of a peace
offering & replied in kind. I remain a fan of their
work. I dislike intensely their anti Albanian racism &
I think they should be called on it. I also believe
their espousal of name calling as a method of
political & artistic debate here is to say the least
counter productive.
