about punk rock

i'll tell you about punk rock. punk rock is a word used by
dilitantes and heartless manipulators about music that takes up the
energies and the bodies and the hearts and the souls and the time and
the minds of young men who give what they have to it, and give
everything they have to it. and it's a term that based on contempt.
it's a term that's based in fashion, style, elitism, satanism, and
everything that's rotten about rock and roll. i don't know johnny
rotten, but i'm sure he puts as much blood and sweat into what he
does as sigmund freud did. you see, what sounds to you like a big
load of trashy old noise is in fact the brilliant music of a genius:
myself. and that music is so powerful that it's quite beyond my
control, and when i'm in the grips of it, i don't feel pleasure and i
don't feel pain, either physically or emotionally. do you understand
what i'm talking about? have you ever felt like that, when you just
couldn't feel anything, and you didn't want to either?

> punk rock is also about the people behind the scenes "putting their blood and sweat into it" so that musicians have an outlet. as the examples of Dischord and Mr. Lady Records should make clear, those people that support the music are as integral as the music itself - especially for independently produced music. iggy's right - "punk" is a fashion label. but music is about more than that feeling of individualistic intoxication that comes from complete self-indulgence (while that certainly exists), at least if people are going to hear it - and you care about that kind of thing. If "punk" was/is ever more than a marketable aesthetic, it existed in the activities off-stage.
i would say the same thing holds true for visual-based art or music.
if you don't have it - get the 20 year document of Dischord records. a pretty good testament to "punk" rock as a viable activity.

Yeah. Dionysian Release.

In all the time I've been playing live shows and we bust it like At the Drive In, I wonder if that feeling is just that…just another escape. I mean, if rock n' roll and all its heroes are just "taking their own pill," like D42 said once…so are we all just engaging in the same drivel as any TV addict, a junkie, or computer nerd punk claims to go beyond?
