Brooklyn Makes

Fri Oct 09, 2009 00:00 - Thu Oct 08, 2009

Brooklyn Makes
A project by Sarah Nelson Wright
with sound by Jennifer Stock

Friday + Saturday
October 9+10, 2009
7:30pm - 10pm

BROOKLYN MAKES is a site-specific video installation in the Williamsburg Greenpoint Industrial Zone, revealing the work of manufacturers in North Brooklyn today.  Video projections by Sarah Nelson Wright will light up the industrial facades of three manufacturers, with evocative sound by Jennifer Stock. Captured inside each business, the videos and sounds bring North Brooklyn’s hidden labor onto the public streets.

Directions: Take the G to Nassau or L to Bedford Ave (also near the B61 and B48 buses). Download a map with the three spots at http://www.brooklynmakes.org or pick one up at Space on Dobbin (50-52 Dobbin Street between Nassau & Norman Avenues in Greenpoint, Brooklyn).

FAQ: Videos will loop at each location, and will play simultaneously throughout both nights.  In case of rain, start at 50-52 Dobbin Street.  Please respect the few cars and neighbors in the area by staying on the sidewalks and keeping your voice down when you pass residential apartments.

Brooklyn Makes is part of Space on Dobbin's activities for Williamsburg Gallery Association's Every 2:nd Friday and openhousenewyork weekend.

Tiltfactor Laboratory Open House
Friday November 16, 2007
3:00 - 5:00 pm
Hunter College
695 Park Ave.
Hunter North Room 482

On Friday, November 16 the Tiltfactor Lab at Hunter College (http://www.tiltfactor.org) will be holding an open house to showcase our latest work and celebrate with those in the city interested in social impact games!! All are welcome to come enjoy refreshments and music, meet the staff, and explore the range of Tiltfactor projects. Student art will also be on display, and board games and video games will be available to play and discuss.

Started in 2005, Tiltfactor is the first game research lab in New York City and the first academic center to focus on social activist games.

The mission of the Tiltfactor lab is to research and develop software and art that creates rewarding, compelling, and socially conscious interactions, with a focus on inventive game design for social change.

The Lab fosters research that results in progressive and educational games, artwork, curricula, social software, academic articles, blog posts, tools, and workshops. Members of Tiltfactor strive to make effective inquiries and interventions that consider how games, and software in general, can evolve to take into account social activist principles. Projects have explored issues such as how to promote cultural diversity and collaborative decision-making through game design, and how to foster the learning of programming among middle school girls. The lab is housed in the Department of Film and Media, Hunter College, home to over 600 undergraduate majors and 70 graduate students in our Integrated Media Arts MFA program with a focus on activist media practice.
