Great link, Marc, thanks. Their links are also terrific.

Hi Jim,

Yes, there are some pretty revealing txt's here…such as the Homeland
security link.

I am very shocked that there are not many net artists/critics/wirters on
this list that make art work regarding the issues of our times…hiding
behind code is not enough, it's like hiding one's head in the sand or hiding
in self - censorship. There needs to be more active statements by braver
academics/writers/artists who personally wish for something different…

First They Came for the Jews
First they came for the Jews
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for the Communists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left
to speak out for me.

Hi Marc,

I am only showing this piece, which I knew browsering Clauss site, what I do
frequentely because I love his work. It is no mine. The authors are the
french Nicolas Clauss and Jean-Jacques Birge. I thought that everybody knew
that "flying puppet" is the site of Clauss. Apologies if I gave the
impression tha the work was mine.

Best wishes,

Regina

Hi Regina…

An easy mistake - I'm to blame here as well in presuming so - no issue at
all.

all the best…marc

HI Marc
You know, I agree 98% of the way.
I'm all for people speaking out, against the war on
Iraq, against the subsequent occupation in the
interests of corporate America and Britain, against
the whittling away of our civil liberties, against the
marketisation of the world, against the fact that
capital can move freely around the world but the poor
( asylum seekers, refugees) cannot.
I hope and believe that within my lifetime we will
tear that old world down and replace it with one that
is based on fairness and decency for all.
Personally I've been continuously politically active
since the late seventies & I've always been absolutely
clear where I stand.
But is it the case then that I should make artworks
that are *direct* comments on political questions?
Sometimes I do ( the sequence of anti war banners I
made on bannerart.org; the piece about the Gulag) but
more often I ,personally, don't.
Actually most of the time I have to say I think it is
more *immediately* politically effective to hand out a
flyer, sell a paper, attend a demonstration than it is
to make an artwork.
That's why I divide my time between the two
activities.
Does this mean that I think that making art is a
luxury, a diversion? - absolutely not.
For, by making works that are lead only by our
imagination, we allow ourselves to dream and those
dreams ,or the best of them, provide something a
little less contingent and evanescent than the flyer
or the newspaper.
They are a enduring witness to what it means now to be
a human being, in all its manifestations, and to what
it *could* mean to be a human being.
Art provides us with hope, vision and direction ( and
for me a kind of fuel) for the other stuff.
In that sense it seems to me that all genuine art
contains within it the seeds of the struggle for human
liberation, for in it we dare to imagine being fully
human in a way that the Bushes and the Blairs and the
Putins would never wish to allow.
I'm delighted to join you in opposing the occupation
of Iraq. Practically I hope that I'll see you and many
others in the UK from this list at the Stop the War
Coalition Demo against the occupation in London on the
27th of this month:
http://www.stopwar.org.uk/
With Blair's current political troubles ( and with
Bush again threatening Iran) this is going to be a
very important event.
Where I think I part company with you is in what seems
to be your requirement that an index of good faith on
these questions should be the making of directly
political or agitational work.
warmest wishes
michael

On another list, there's some regurge and mastication of Adorno's statement
that after Auschwitz, there can be no more lyric poetry, that it is a
variety of barbarism to write in such a way in a world in which such
atrocity is ongoing.

Yet a world without lyric, without song, what's that?

Those capable of making art that is uplifting should not be dissuaded from
it.

It doesn't necessitate turning a blind eye to troubles.

Lyricism and poetry in general should be capable of modulation through the
full range of our experience, through all the dimensions of language.

That's beautiful, Manik. Best regards to you, also.

Hi Jim,

That is it:
In art there is no rules. It is just because of this I am artist.
The artist makes his/hers own rules… and sometimes, even though we are not
being clearly political, we are being, it is the case of the bathrooms
(http://arteonline.arq.br/museu/bathroom ) of the Museum of the Essential
and Beyond That, of the museum (http://arteonline.arq.br ) in your all and
of all colab works done today, like Paris Connection
(http://arteonline.arq.br/Paris), for example. For an artist be politicized
is not necessary to show the nude and raw reality. Although that also is not
prohibited. In this list we have had lately a beautiful contribution of
Manik, that shows the raw reality poetically. We will be launching his
complete series of "museums for beginners" in the news of Spring (southern
hemisphere) and Autumn (nothern hemisphere) of the *our* museum. And we are
waiting for lots of contributions for the restaurant of the museum, food
recipes can be a very political or poetical subject… In art everything can
be another thing, for me it is just the mistery and the reason for Art keeps
artists in its sweet prision.

You all will know the restaurant soon, perhaps this week. It is placed on
the terrace of the virtual museum and has a rotative dome to show all the
cyberspace and the beautiful diversity of the Art on the Web!

Last, but not least, as I have said some days ago:

""The most revolutionary act one can commit in our world nowadays is to be
happy."

Yesterday, here in my beautiful city, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, we have a
manifastion asking for the disarmament.

PS: To one who do not know me, I forgot to say that I have three very
political works:

Book of Sand> http://www.iis.com.br/~regvampi/arteonline4/mainintro.htm
Sabia Virtuality> http://www.arteonline.arq.br/Virtualidade
Paris / Rio de Janeiro Gallery> http://arteonline.arq.br (go down by scrool
rolls)
