The College of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University invites
applications for the position of Chair for the Department of Art
beginning in the Fall of 2012. The department seeks an accomplished
artist/scholar with appropriate professional and/or academic
administrative experience, to lead the Department of Art. Successful
candidates will demonstrate excellence in teaching and
professional/artistic/scholarly work as well as demonstrated leadership
ability. The Department Chair will have the opportunity to shape and
implement the vision of the department in all aspects of teaching,
research, and service on a local, national, and international level and
will guide and advocate for faculty and students.  The chair will also
work to develop and sustain new programs and collaborative relations
across the college, university and with outside institutions.
 
In its 110 year history, the Department of Art at Syracuse University is
renowned for its tradition of excellence and innovation. The Department
was the first BFA degree granting program in the country and is
currently comprised of several renowned and nationally ranked programs
and a diverse and engaged community of visual artists, illustrators, and
art and design education practitioners. The department is composed of
more than 200 undergraduate majors, 33 graduate students, 20 faculty and
its multiple programs occupy several buildings across campus.  The
Department of Art is an art school in the context of a tier 1 research
institution and is housed within the College of Visual and Performing
Arts, which is also comprised of the Departments of Transmedia, Art
Foundation, Design, Communication and Rhetorical Studies, Drama, and the
Setnor School of Music. Pursuant to its aims of transdisciplinary
teaching methodologies and strategies, the Department is seeking a
candidate who will work alongside faculty in defining, implementing, and
sustaining a progressive vision of the study and practice of visual
arts in the 21st century.
