Follow the Receiver, by Rebecca Nagle, is an interactive cell phone game happening at Conflux Festival 2007 September 13-16. Participants describe their bodies’ movements in a cell phone conversation to the artist, who then reenacts the described movements. The artist’s performance does not engage her physical surroundings. Instead, she awkwardly and playfully moves through the space according to participants’ instructions. Any one can participate anywhere at any time during the festival for any length of time. Players sign up on the project’s website: www.rebeccanagle.com.

Communication technology creates a dislocation between its users and their immediate spaces. Cell phone users disengage from their surroundings through conversations with people in other spaces. By exaggerating this dislocation, and playfully engaging technology, communication, and space, Follow the Receiver forefronts what is usually lost in communication technology: how physical bodies interact with their physical environments.
