Digital Media tenure-track faculty position at UNC Chapel Hill

Position Summary:
The Department of Art at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill seeks applicants for a full-time, tenure-track faculty appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor with an anticipated start date of July 2011. The Department seeks an artist whose creative practice is in the area of digital media. Competitive candidates must work directly with digital media and should have extensive experience in at least one of the following areas: digital photography, programming for interactive and/or web environments, programmed robotics, computational art, real-time graphical production and/or motion capture, and technology in public space. The position includes teaching, research and service. Teaching consists of 4 undergraduate courses per year in digital media/new genres, work with independent study and honors undergraduate students, and work with graduate students in all fine art disciplines. As a Research I institution, faculty are expected to maintain an active program of creative research, demonstrated through visible public distribution of creative works including but not limited to exhibition, performance or other professional engagement. Service responsibilities include area management/coordination and participation on departmental committees which may include curricular initiatives or non-curricular programming (exhibitions, lecture series, etc.) as assigned by the department chair.

Education Requirements:
Applicants must have an M.F.A. degree.

Qualifications and Experience:
Applicants must have an active professional creative practice with a significant exhibition record. A minimum of three years teaching experience at the college level with demonstrated ability to teach both theory and practice is required. Primary teaching responsibilities will be in digital/new media. The successful candidate understands the breadth of issues (technical, formal and conceptual) and the range of artistic practice within the discipline. Applicants should be able to teach across this range incorporating contemporary, art historical and theoretical concerns, utilizing innovative pedagogical approaches. The ideal candidate would also have a strong conceptual and historical grasp of issues in contemporary art and be able to support the use of digital media in interdisciplinary practices in all areas of the studio program. An ability to form interdisciplinary collaborations (with other departments and institutions) is also an asset.
