Assistant/Associate Professor of Graphic Design

The School of Art and Design, New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University is seeking a graphic designer for a full-time, tenure track teaching position as Assistant/Associate Professor to begin August 2010. The position includes teaching Sophomore, Junior, and Senior Design as well as teaching graduate students in the Electronic Integrated Arts MFA program.

The Design Program is an integral part of the Division of Expanded Media, which includes video art, sonic art, print media, and interactive art. The Design Program emphasizes a strong foundation in graphic communication while interacting with the traditions and processes of each area of Expanded Media and the School of Art and Design as a whole. Every three years our computer labs are renewed with the latest computers and software is regularly updated. In addition, two full-time technicians, in cooperation with faculty, maintain our labs providing facilities for the highest level of design education and professional design practice. Design students work side by side with students focused in other areas such as digital printmaking and video. The Design Program regularly invites designers and artists to the School for lectures, workshops, exhibits, and critiques. The Design Program also supports an active AIGA Student Chapter.

The School of Art and Design is an accredited member of NASAD, with 32 full-time faculty serving approximately 500 students. The School is unique among institutions of higher education with an open curriculum allowing a robust and diverse studio art experience. Students and faculty alike thrive in an intensive and supportive learning environment. SOAD students are fully integrated into Alfred University’s community of 2,300 students. The New York State College of Ceramics (NYSCC) includes both the School of Art and Design and the Inamori School of Engineering. The NYSCC was established in 1900 to advance research in art, design, and engineering. That intellectual and creative legacy exists in all of the areas of study in the SOAD.

Specific Skills
MFA in Graphic Design or equivalent preferred; however, a candidate with significant professional experience — a minimum of seven years’ professional practice — and University level teaching will be considered. The successful candidate will be versatile and capable of teaching from introductory to advanced levels of print, web, and digital media. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong involvement in design research, a vigorous studio practice, a multi-disciplinary approach to design, as well as knowledge of design history, theory, and criticism.
