Spaceworks @ The Tank
Farklempt! 2.0 And the Second Orrery

March 24-April 15, 2004
Opening Reception on March 24, 6-8pm

New York, NY - Spaceworks @ The Tank is pleased to present its two person gallery show featuring work from Jason Van Anden and Mark Esper.

New media artist Jason Van Anden presents Farklempt! version 2.0, a physical realization of Rhizome.org commissioned online videogame that challenges its players to mange their emotional-health through the skillful manipulation of representational feelings against others trying to do the same. USA Today said of Farklempt! 1.0: "You will not see another game like this one for many a day, we suspect, unless someone finds a way to squeeze a copy of The Sims until the pure essence comes out." Van Anden holds a BFA in Sculpture from Syracuse University and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. More about Jason Van Anden and his artwork can be found at www.smileproject.com.

Mark Esper develops projects involving electronic circuits and mechanical devices in attempts to explore and render the connections between the human condition, the soul or psyche, and physical reality. His work-in-progress Second Orrery produces a tornado-like effect by periodically dumping refrigerated air onto heated water. This in turn creates a twisting column of steam which is reflected in three other spiral forms constituting the work.

The Tank is a non-profit arts space located on 42nd Street in midtown Manhattan, operational since the summer of 2003. Spaceworks @ the Tank, the venue's basement gallery, is committed to experimentation in the visual arts and music, and seeks to promote a dialogue between emerging artists and the public. The Tank has been featured in The New York Times, TimeOut NY, The Village Voice, Wired Magazine, and The Daily News, and in NJN’s "State of the Arts" program: "The New New Thing."
