The University at Buffalo, State University of New York invites applications for a 2 year renewable Clinical Assistant Professor (10-month) position in the Department of Media Study. The department seeks applications from media artists in digital video and film whose work may include fiction, nonfiction or hybrid genres as well as new digital cinema, interactive digital video and/or experimental screen based media. DMS recognizes the rapid changes in screen culture that now encompasses territory spanning the movie theatre to the smart phone. Applicants must be able to teach technical and conceptual production skills and be committed to teaching film and video in our integrated program of production and critical studies. Required technical skills in video production include proficiency in DV cameras, lenses, lighting, audio recording, production management, workflow and post production (Premiere and FCP). Candidates may have interests in narrative, storytelling, independent cinema, documentary, formalism, global cinema, science, landscape, urban/rural people and spaces, migration media, experimental film, multi-channel media, personal film and/or community media. Successful candidates will be expected to contribute to our film studies program. We seek candidates with a strong festival and/or exhibition record, teaching experience, fluency in film studies and a commitment to engage in the evolving re-definition of the practices of image/sound making in the 21st century. Demonstrated work in socially engaged practice is welcome.


The Department of Media Study has an undergraduate BA program and graduate programs at the MA, MFA and Ph.D. levels. Minimum requirements: MFA, PhD or equivalent in Media, Film, Art or a related field, conferred by time of appointment.
