All students matriculate collectively through a rigorous graduate seminar schedule. All students are afforded the opportunity to work in individual, white-box studios across disciplines of Painting, Printmaking, Sculpture and Installation, Social Practice and Public Art, and/ or Photography, Moving Image, and Sound. This program provides an intellectual and creative environment in which students can develop their individual potential as a professional artist, conducting independent research in the chosen area of study. Our faculty of artists and art historians work closely with graduate students in developing the exhibitions at the Ackland Museum and Allcott Gallery and the Hanes Visiting Artist lecture series which has included some of the most prominent contemporary critics, curators, artists, and thinkers. Our Visiting Artist Professional program invites art professionals to visit the studios of graduate students and speak with students about their career concerns in a candid setting. The studio art program is delivered through studio critiques, seminars and lectures. The Hanes Visiting Artist Program is an integral part of the MFA in Studio Arts. Recent visiting artists include: Jon Kessler, Thomas Nozkowski, Stephen Vitiello, Shannon Ebner, Lucy Raven, Kevin Jerome Everson, Ruben Ochoa, Clifford Owens, Chitra Ganesh, Dana Schutz, and Liz Magic Laser.
