Video Trans-Americas - Video Screenings at the Americas Society NY

Americas Society announces the launching of Video Trans-Americas, a
project room dedicated to introducing New Yorkers to important and
innovative videos by artists from throughout the Western Hemisphere.

This initiative is inspired by the Chilean born artist Juan Downey
(1940-1993), whose 1971 video installation series of the same name was
one of the first to offer a broad view of "America" as inflected by
historical, anthropological and personal concerns. In this spirit, Video
Trans-Americas programs will celebrate the electronic media's position
as a mediator between artistic expression and social intervention.

Appropriately, Video Trans-Americas's inaugural series will be a
selection of Juan Downey's celebrated single-channel videos, chosen by
Marilys Downey and Gabriela Rangel. This presentation will complement
the gallery exhibition Pedro Reyes ad usum: To Be Used, on view from
February 28 through May 5, 2007
