panel discussion on media art Japan/Germany
At GOETHE INSTITUT TOKYO

participants:
Yukiko Shikata, Tokyo
Ingo Guenther, Tokyo
Dr. Dirk Matejovski, Duesseldorf
Mischa Kuball, Duesseldorf

The panel discussion will focus on the intersection as well as on the
inherent divergences between a theoretical examination of modern media
and
the practical realization of media art. Against the background of an
international context, specific German-Japanese traditions and
processes of
exchange will be elaborated.

Media Art has become an integral and essential part of visual arts.
Especially in North-Rhine Westphalia, Media Art has its definite place
and
even gains international reputation represented by several institutions
such
as the Academy of Media Arts Cologne, or the Academy of Arts
Duesseldorf. In
analogy to the differentiation of diverse forms of media art, media
oriented
cultural studies have developed different approaches to analyze the
media
cosmos of modernity. In this context, the planned symposium will
concentrate
on the respective intersections between media art and media theory and
thus
point to possibilities of exchange and interaction, as well as to
existing
divergences. For on the one hand many artists appreciate the
theoretical/academic attendance of their production, and on the other
hand
numerous media theorists have always referred to the aesthetic
possibilities
of the new media. The description of these discursive mechanisms of
exchange
and separation is of major interest for the German and Japanese media
artists and theorists. In this regard, one has to refer to the media
philosopher Villem Flusser in particular, as he has a unique North-Rhine
Westphalian history of reception and production and is at the same time
the
topic of intensive discussion in Japan. One of the main goals of the
symposium is to stimulate a dialogue on this topic between the prominent
media scholar and curator Yukiko Shikata and the renowned media artist
Mischa Kuball. Prof. Mischa Kuball maintains numerous contacts and
cooperation projects in Japan. A talk about the media philosophical and
aesthetic dimensions of the thinking of Villem Flusser given by Dr. Dirk
Matejovski (director of the Science Center North-Rhine Westphalia) will
attend and complement the symposium. It is to expect that the event will
receive a lot of attention among artists, media scholars, intellectuals,
students, and information multipliers and thus stimulate specific
Japanese-North-Rhine Westphalian cooperations. We hope to be able to
continue the symposium in North-Rhine Westphalia in the future (for
example
in cooperation with the Japan-Foundation).
