When I was a kid, I was morbidly and disturbingly fascinated by the Boars
Head coldcuts trucks. If you don't know them, they were "box trucks" with
distinctive, gleaming paint-jobs – Dark blood-red, black, and gold with
subtle chrome trimmings. The colors made them ghastly and hearst-like. The
colors seemed like colors of death. Whenever I saw them on the highway, I
imagined terrible things going on inside. The images were vague, but I kind
of thought of them as evil ambulances, where pain was being inflicted, not
abated. On a psychological level, maybe it was my child mind manifesting
some dark underbelly of manicured suburban life. I don't know. But it was
always a creepy experience to see these trucks, and even now when I think of
them, I feel like there's something wrong. I guess the mobile death-RV's in
this link are "professional", antiseptic white and blue instead of Boars
Heads' ghoulish colors, but it feels like some kind of evil I witnessed long
ago has made itself real.
