Aesthetic Evolution

I think the idea of aesthetic evolution might help explain the problem of
relocating the aura. P.B.Medawar stated there were two kinds of evolution,
two ways of handing down information from generation to generation. One was
by genetics (the actual dna) and the other was tradition (learned and
transmitted knowledge). Both means of handing down information over time
were susceptible to evolution. The former uses endosomatic (inside the
body) evolution, the latter exosomatic (outside the body) evolution. (As a
side note, he very emphatically made the point that the two types of
evolution have virtually nothing in common.)

Exosomatic evolution is a way of adapting to the environment. It occurs
withiin "tradition", which is the sum total of all exosomatic information at
a given time. It's very important not to lose this information because
unlike genetic information it doesn't come back with each birth. The
tradition and culture hold the information.

Before mechanical reproduction, the objects held the information and they
were the information. They were the network of distribution as well as the
content of the network. Later on, machines were invented that could
replicate the old objects, so the old objects were no longer the network of
distribution–there was a new technology to transport the information.

This idea should not be overtaxed but kept simple. Before mechanical
replication and distribution, the objects were the network. After M R and
D, the network function was split off from the objects. This had a big
effect on the quality and character of the informational environment. It
was a big change.

I think Benjamin felt the change was as yet unresolved and the outcome was
somewhat in limbo. Would the network turn humans into machines, or would
humans turn the network human? I think it's still an ongoing effort and
though there are plateaus and major hurdles that can be cleared it a priori
can never be finished once and for all.

Also up in the air is whether Benjamin lost sight of responsibility and the
operation of slow time. He might have done so somewhat–it has been argued
by some. My impression is that he felt that either Fascism or Communism was
going to dominate the entire globe, and that Communism with artistic freedom
was the preferable option. Yet he said some very ambivalent things about
Communism too. It shouldn't be forgotten that he was Jewish and died while
trying to escape Nazi Germany. That type of condition will definitely tint
your outlook.

So, here are some watercolors I've been doing in the last year or so. No
big whoop. Also, if you want the info about DVD's you have to request it
from me directly as it is not on my site right now.

Best regards,
