Wessel Freiherr Freytag von Loringhoven (born 10 November 1899 in Gro
-Born, Courland, died 26 July 1944 in Mauerwald, East Prussia)) was
Colonel in the German General Staff of the Wehrmacht and a member of the
German resistance against Adolf Hitler. He was a friend of Claus Graf
Schenk von Stauffenberg, who was the leader of the July 20 Plot against
Hitler in 1944.

essel Freytag von Loringhoven was descended from the Baltic German stirps
of an old Westphalian aristocratic family. He grew up in Adiam
nde in Livonia. After his Abitur he joined the Baltic-German Landeswehr in
1918, and with the formation of Independent Latvia he became an officer of
the 13th Infantry Regiment of Latvia. In 1922 he left Latvia in order to
enter the Reichswehr of the Weimar Republic in Germany. In his military
career he joined in the Wehrmacht High Command as a colonel in 1943. He
initially sympathized with the National Socialist program for Germany but
was disaffected by the Night of the Long Knives massacre. After more
negative experiences with warcrimes in Operation Barbarossa he joined the
German resistance. With the help of Admiral Wilhelm Canaris he was
relocated to Wehrmacht High Command in 1943.

The Provider of the explosives for the July 20 plot
Wessel Freytag von Loringhoven provided the detonator charge and
explosives for the assassination attempt against Hitler on July 20th,
1944. He was able to obtain unrecognized English explosives from Abwehr
booty sources. Ernst Kaltenbrunner (RSHA) managed to discover the
delinquent of Freytag-Loringhoven. On 26 July 1944, immediately before his
arrest through Gestapo, Freytag-Loringhoven committed suicide, knowing
from his Abwehr-training of interrogation techniques. After his death his
wife got imprisoned with the other relatives of the members of the plot.
His four sons got separated from their mother and only liberated by Allied
forces.
