Exhibit8 @ The Digital Hub

Exhibit 8: New Frontiers in Gaming

Exhibit 8: New Frontiers in Gaming is the latest in a series of exhibitions that examines, demonstrates and explores the creative and innovative potential of digital technology.

Exhibit 8 is an exhibition of all that is real and physical in the world of computer games, featuring commercial games products and experiments coming from the worlds of research and art.

We examine the blurring of frontiers in gaming where game technology has other uses and where the virtual world slips into the real world - players trading World of Warcraft points on e-Bay; soap operas being played out by characters from Sims 2; wireless connectivity; alternative interfaces; games you can control with your whole body.

Recent Developments in hardware and interfaces pose new challenges to game designers and developers. The proliferation of wireless technology, which gives games consul’s multiplayer capabilities, also allows them to crossover into the domains of communication and entertainment. Some of the new consols could be considered ‘lifestyle’ accessories, where texting, chat, email, listening to music and even watching whole movies are ‘additional features’.

The launch of these new consoles has triggered an unprecedented response from fans who have raced to outdo each other in devising outrageous ways to modify and customise their new consoles. The upsurge in repurposing of hardware and massive open source collaborations is evidence that ‘independence’ is thriving in the gaming realm.

In 2005, games are moving out of the living room, off the couch and into the real world.
