bastard channel is a cross between a television and a web project, a
platform in the Internet that tells the story of itself as a television
channel. The channel works with the lowtech and financial means of network
art and has collaborators on four continents. Its programme can be
received all over the world.
On 18 November 2004, bastard channel will be celebrating its start with
six programmes within the framework of the Viper Media Festival in the
Basel Kunsthalle. By the spring of 2005, new programmes will have been
added every month. The participants are artists from Basel, Berlin,
Geneva, Johannesburg, New York, Ostrava, Paris, Seoul, Tokyo and Zurich,
as well as collaborating text writers, translators, programmers and
graphic artists.
It will not be possible to receive all the bastard channel programmes at
all times, for our online project operates according to the television
programme structure. Trailers will provide information about the times of
day and night when you will be able to receive the next programmes in your
part of the world. Whereas the terrestrial television stations are working
on making it possible for programmes to be broadcast online independently
of times and dates, bastard channel is set on limiting consumption: we do
not want our programme to be available all the time, and we take the
opportunity of wagging a cautionary medial forefinger at the "zap & surf
attitude".
bastard channel is intended to reflect the web as a time medium. This is a
cross between the babbling TV promises and the hesitant web response of a
56k modem. Some of our programmes are run like films, animating the screen
at a breakneck pace, others step intentionally on the brake, tempting and
frustrating at one and the same time. Still others bring streams of data
onto the screen or make interaction offers where the public can spend 30
minutes or 30 seconds. At bastard channel, even the TV test pictures are
interactive, and viewers receive personal answers to existential problems
from the Television Sphinx - without, however, knowing whether they will
receive a written or spoken answer from the Sphinx herself or her
intelligent robot within two to three days.
56kTV - bastard channel has its own programme magazine. International
authors from the worlds of the film, art and the media sciences comment on
the TV project and the individual programmes, thus enriching the
audio-visual online offer by a print & read version. We are investing in a
good visual concept and leaving the print-on-demand to our public, since
the TV magazines can be printed on every home printer.

This work is a portrait-testament, made at the request of the legendary
Situationist writer-philosopher-artist in 1994 when he realized his end
was near, due to a painful terminal illness. In this film, Guy Debord sums
up his life, emphasizing the importance of his films and his attraction to
painting, then pays homage to his friends Asger Jrn, Gil Wolman, Alice
Becker Ho and others. Debord offers a commentary on our society through a
succession of extracts from televised reports, important moments of the
previous ten years, "torpedoed" by the author's written commentary
inscribed on the screen like the pages of a book.
Film Night, organized by John Gianvito (a filmmaker, teacher, and curator
based in Boston), is in conjunction with the exhibition Cerith Wyn Evans:
Thoughts unsaid, now forgotten… on view at the MIT List Visual Arts
Center through December 31, 2004. All exhibitions and public programs at
the MIT List Visual Arts Center are free and open to the public.

ARTMOBILE FIRST TO LAUNCH WIRELESS ART AND ART SERVICES WITH ART EDITIONS

Boston, MA, November 22, 2004 - Yellow Pepper Wireless LLC announced today
it had launched ArtMobile, its new service offering unique works of art
for mobile telephones. The first works of art editions will be available
for sale at Art Basel Miami Beach. The company has retained the curatorial
services of Janet Phelps of New York to select artists and their works,
and to serve as the company's gallery relations liaison.
Original works of art will be commissioned from artists who range from
emerging to established. The images will be sold individually or as a
portfolio, and will include sound, still and moving images. Edition sizes
and prices will vary by artist. At the time of this announcement, the
list of artists includes: Hernan Bas, Luis Gispert, Naomi Fisher, Jaie
Hwang, and Gean Moreno, all represented by Fred Snitzer Gallery, in Miami;
Raymond Saa, represented by Ambrosino Gallery, in Miami; and Stephen
Vitiello, represented by The Project, in New York. ArtMobile will offer
the first editions for sale inside the fair during Art Basel Miami Beach
on December 2-5, 2004 in Miami Beach, FL at gallery booths representing
participating artists. Other artists include Millree Hughes, represented
by Lemon Sky Projects & Editions, in Miami and Michael Steinberg Fine Art,
in New York; and Larissa Bates, represented by Monya Rowe, in New York.

Opsound launches its copyleft record label with a release party for the
electroacoustic band Catalpa Catalpa's debut album, Hardoncity. The
evening will feature live performances from Catalpa Catalpa, Ben Owen &
Andy Graydon, Scavenger, and Weapons of Mass Destruction and will take
place at the CBGB Lounge, 315 Bowery from 8pm to midnight on Thursday,
December 2, 2004.
"I'm delighted to have Catalpa Catalpa's debut as the label's first
release," says Sal Randolph, Opsound's founder. "Catalpa Catalpa's roots
are in rock but their sheer love of sound and noise breaks down genre
barriers, incorporating elements usually segregated into pop, electronica,
hardcore, and experimental."

Opsound uses a copyleft-style license designed by Creative Commons
especially for music, art, writing and other kinds of non-software
content. Creative Commons is a nonprofit organization dedicated to
expanding alternatives to traditional copyright through its spectrum of
licenses. Creative Commons licenses are featured in the cover story of
November's Wired Magazine which includes a CD of Creative Commons licensed
music by artists like David Byrne, the Beastie Boys and Le Tigre, given
away free with every issue.

Dangermouse's "Encore" off the infamous Grey Album.
The official site is down, likely a result of popularity or legality, and
