The Analogous Landscape: Mt. Shasta test expedition

On June 10th of 2003, C5 conducted the second phase of The Analogous Landscape project, with a test expedition of Mt. Shasta, a 14,162 ft. volcanic peak in the Cascade Range of North America. The purpose of the expedition was to evaluate customized software for monitoring team members, test data visualization techniques and to conduct a variety of social experiments.

The Analogous Landscape project was initiated at the II International Art Biennial Buenos Aires in November of 2002 where it was featured at the Museo Nacional de Bella Artes. Two sculptural models of Mt. Fuji and Mt. Shasta were presented. Each model was produced directly from DEM (Digital Elevation Data) obtained from the NASA/Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Japanese ASTER satellite topographic mapping projects. The database model of Mt. Shasta served as the principal map for the initial test ascent and was physically carried to the summit of Mt. Shasta on June 10th where it was photographed.
