o New Bill Would Deploy FBI to Battle Online Copyright Infringement

Washington – A new bill introduced into the U.S. House would increase the
FBI's responsibilities to include battling copyright infringement on the
Internet. The Piracy Deterrence and Education Act of 2003, sponsored by
Reps. Lamar Smith (R-Texas) and Howard Berman (D-Calif.), asks the FBI to
create a deterrence program including an FBI "warning label" similar to
those on DVDs that copyright holders could send to alleged infringers. It
would also compel the FBI to hire more computer piracy experts and share
information on Internet piracy more freely with other law enforcement
agencies. "This common sense, bipartisan bill will help ensure that
federal prosecutors across the country have the resources and expertise to
fully enforce the copyright laws on the books – especially against those
who illegally distribute massive quantities of copyrighted music online,"
said RIAA president Cary Sherman."
