IV. Bauhaus Kolleg 2002 / 2003

Bauhaus Kolleg IV Dot.City - 3rd trimester: May 22nd to August 22nd, 2003
The third trimester of the Bauhaus Kolleg Dot.City will start on May 22nd,
2003. Subject is the potential of modern information and communication
technologies for the re-construction and re-activation of public spheres
within urban spaces. Chosen site for examinations and experiments is the
town of Dessau. Architects, designers, artists and planners work together at
the Bauhaus Kolleg in a multidisciplinary, international team to develop
ideas and concepts. Since the beginning of the 1990s, the town of Dessau has
to deal with the breakdown of its industrial history. The consequences are
radical questions concerning the future perspectives of this city. In spite
of a difficult economic situation and the loss in population (1990 ca.
100,000 / 2003 ca. 80,000), Dessau is "functioning" as a city regarding
administration and built environment. But it is missing "urbanity",
complexity and density of relations. These are lost. Our question is: Can
the use of ICT counteract the continuous processes of devaluation, the loss
of urban identity, the lack of multifunctional networks? Can the activation
and implementation of new social techniques of knowledge production
compensate for missing economical impulses and functions? How do such
processes generate new species of urban values? Is it possible to re-program
local social resources using intelligent network technologies? How do urban
action areas designed for this purpose look like? How can urban information
spheres and physical urban spaces penetrate each other? The Bauhaus Kolleg
defines itself as a workshop for ideas. Participants are prompted to search
for new ways of conceptual thinking and designing. Dessau is particularly
interesting as a case study for our projects because of the limited success
of conventional instruments of planning and design. The routines of the
design professions swiftly come up against limiting factors. During the past
trimesters (1st trimester: Sept 23rd to Dec 12th, 2002 / 2nd trimester: Jan
23st to April 17th, 2003), we mainly gathered basis knowledge, discussed
methods, and carried out some rather situationist experiments. Goal of the
3rd trimester are long term planning projects. Ideas and concepts developed
during the first two trimesters will be qualified in co-operation with
protagonists of the town's economy and politics, but also with external
guest experts. Where possible they will be developed into realizable
projects. The "International Building Exhibition Sachsen-Anhalt - City 2010"
will form an additional background for the scope of work. Possible partners
are chosen IT enterprises, the chamber of trade and commerce, the department
of works, the building societies and the town's administration. The entire
process of the Bauhaus Kolleg's work is continuously documented and
published at www.bauhaus-dessau.de/dotcity . Parallel to the Dessau team,
groups at Caracas, Malmo and New York participate in the Bauhaus Kolleg.
They contribute their own projects to the program; they give input to the
website which is thus developed into a thematic forum. Chats held every two
weeks provide a regular platform for exchange. All participating partners
contribute information, and the chats are open to everybody interested also
from outside the Kolleg. So, if you are interested in the Kolleg's program,
get additional information at the Dot.City website, participate in one of
the next chats, or apply directly at
