SUE DE BEER 'Hans und Grete"

opening reception: saturday, february 15, 6-8 pm

Postmasters Gallery is pleased to present "Hans und Grete" -
a two channel video installation by Sue de Beer. On view between
February 15 and March 15,this will be Sue de Beer's first exhibition
at Postmasters. Completed in 2002, "Hans und Grete" was made during
de Beer's residency at the American Academy in Berlin. Interweaving
the stories of four protagonists, it portrays the psychological lives
and dark obsessions of American teens. The video reenacts grotesque
incidents of real life youth violence culled from the recent history
of American school shootings, interspersing these actual events with
references to past icons of the underground, specifically the
glamorized revolutionaries of the Baader Meinhof terrorist
group."Hans und Grete" links calculated acts of violence with the
escapist fantasies of the youth subcultures of psychedelic rock,
metal, goth and video games, examining the allure of revolution, and
of destruction.
The video will be presented on a custom made hinged screen
positioned within an installation of a carpeted teenager's room with
oversized stuffed animals that will serve as seating for the
audience. In the second gallery we will present photographic stills
shot by de Beer during the production of "Hans und Grete."

An essay by Stephen Hilger "A Look at Hans und Grete" from
the catalog of Sue De Beer published by American Academy in Berlin
and Kunstlerhaus Bethanien is available upon request by fax or e-mail.

of Art, and her BFA from the Parsons School of Design in 1995. Her

Museum, the New Museum for ContemporaryArt, Deitch Projects, and the
Jack Tilton Gallery in New York City, Los Angeles Contemporary
Exhibitions and the Sandroni Rey Gallery in Los Angeles, the Center

Francisco, Centro-Museo Vasco de Arte Contemporaneo, Centro Museo
Jose Guerrero, and Museo de Arte Contemporanea de Vigo, in Spain, the
