FULL-TIME FACULTY POSITION IN VISUAL COMMUNICATION DESIGN
The Department of Visual Communication Design (VCD) at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) invites applications for a full-time, tenured or tenure-track faculty position, beginning August 2016. Rank and salary are competitive with peer institutions and are commensurate with quality of practice, scholarship, and current academic research, extent of teaching experience, and current professional standing.

PROGRAM PROFILE
Join a visual communication/graphic design program grounded in a critical approach to design through a variety of practices reflecting the expanded landscape of visual communication design. One of the largest studio programs at SAIC, the VCD department has 7 full-time and more than 25 part-time faculty with a broad range of expertise. Situated within a dynamic and interdisciplinary BFA program, the VCD department offers students a variety of curricular pathways, which are augmented by an array of electives in VCD and other studio and academic departments. VCD also has a robust and highly competitive Master of Fine Arts Program (MFA) or Post-Baccalaureate MFA (PMFA) Program. Faculty advise graduate students in one-on-one tutorials to develop a diverse range of visual thesis work challenging the boundaries of art and design. RESPONSIBILITIES
Full-time faculty in VCD teach and advise undergraduate and graduate students within the interdisciplinary art and design school environment of SAIC. Faculty impart to their students a progressive awareness of the changing and interrelated roles of representations, objects, environments, interactions, and media; maintain an active and recognized professional practice of client-initiated or self-initiated design development and/or academic research investigations; and participate in the SAIC community through ongoing curricular development, and department and school governance.

QUALIFICATIONS
A terminal degree in visual communication/graphic design or other relevant field of study and teaching experience is preferred. The candidate’s creative activity may address social, structural, or cultural issues within the broad spectrum of visual communication design, ranging from cyberspace to public space to print. Areas of expertise may include diverse content structures (narrative, informational, or interpretive strategies), interaction (digitally-interactive or physically-interactive communication architectures), and content formats (screens, pages, objects, or environments). The ideal candidate will contribute to the diversity of the School by bringing a perspective, way of thinking, and/or a unique set of experiences that expand the intellectual conversations and design practices in the field.
