The School for the Contemporary Arts at Simon Fraser University invites applications for a tenure-track position as assistant professor of art history to begin January 1, 2016. We are seeking a scholar in the history and theory of twentieth and twenty-first century art. Scholars with additional interest in cinema studies or electronic or computer-based media art are especially encouraged to apply. As a scholar in an art school, this person should enjoy teaching aspiring artists as well as scholars. The candidate will teach undergraduate courses within the B.A. in Art, Performance, and Cinema Studies; in addition, the candidate will teach seminars in the M.A. in Comparative Media Arts and occasional scholarly courses in the M.F.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies. Faculty are required to maintain active scholarship. Advising, committee responsibilities, and supervision of graduate students in both the M.A. and the M.F.A. programs are expected.

The School for the Contemporary Arts is an interdisciplinary school for the creative practice and scholarly study of the fine and performing arts. It offers the B.A. in Art, Performance, and Cinema Studies, five B.F.A.s in dance, film, music, theatre and visual art, the M.A. in Comparative Media Arts, and an interdisciplinary M.F.A.
The B.A. in Art, Performance, and Cinema Studies is a four-year interdisciplinary program in studies of the arts. It has two streams, one in art and performance studies and one in cinema studies. The M.A. in Comparative Media Arts is a four-semester program that takes a comparative perspective that synthesizes the historical, theoretical, and methodological approaches of art history, cinema studies, performance studies, and studies of computer-based arts.

Requirements for the position include a Ph.D. in art history or an appropriate field; a serious scholarly research program; and a respectable record of publishing. Teaching experience is an asset.
