The Art Department in the College of Fine Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences seeks applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Interactive Design/Web Design, commencing September 1, 2015. The position involves teaching four to five classes per year in web design, interactive media, interactive design, mobile app design and computer programming at the undergraduate level. In addition, participating in general department and University activities including committee work, student advising, curriculum development, senior project reviews, and undergraduate recruitment will be expected. The successful candidate will demonstrate passionate engagement in her/his own practice, research, and scholarly activities. The Art Department emphasizes conceptual and aesthetic innovation while encouraging student-centered pedagogy. The successful candidate will hold an advanced degree in interactive design, digital media, or a related field. At least three years of college-level teaching experience in practical, theoretical and critical aspects of Interactive Design is required along with experience in curriculum development. A minimum of three years professional experience in interactive media related industry such as web design or mobile application design is preferred. This new position will strengthen our department in the area of Human-Computer Interaction. It will complement our existing programs in Art and Design and particularly our concentrations in Graphic Design, Motion Graphics, Animation and Digital Media. This is a time of rapid growth for the Art and Design programs. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to help us build our vision for the future, pursue original research, and collaborate across many disciplines. The position entails a broad interdisciplinary background and approach. The candidate will develop innovative curriculum focusing on usability and user-interface design. The Art Department is part of a large research university. Interdisciplinary collaborations and cross-pollination with other colleges, departments and programs are encouraged. Excellent written and communication skills are a must.


Minimum Requirements:

  • MFA or PhD in interactive design, web design, game design or a closely related field
  • Substantial portfolio that demonstrates expertise and success in creative and professional practice
  • Experience with a variety of platforms including smartphones, tablets and web browsers
  • A minimum of three years of teaching experience at the college level and professional experience in interactive design, web design or mobile application design (three or more years of experience in the industry preferred)
  • Demonstrated knowledge and expertise in UX, concept development, requirement elicitation, usability testing and design validation
  • The ability to work effectively with diverse groups
  • In-depth knowledge of industry standard software packages including Adobe products and high level of technical proficiency in JavaScript, HTML5, PHP, CSS3, Web development, Mobile Applications (iOS platforms /iPhone Applications) or similar field appropriate programming environments.
  • Expertise in writing code and teaching students how to write code
  • Experience with a diverse student body

  • Acknowledgment within the field with publications and/or creative work, awards or other professional recognition
  • Understanding and research on the theoretical and critical aspects of Human-Computer Interaction, user-centered design, usability and user interface design
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor students and teach them practical industry skills
  • vExperience leading students through real-life work experiences and collaborative professional projects
  • Ability to network and lead collaborations with other institutions, industry, and research groups.
