Report: Browser War Widening As Netscape Market Share Decreases

San Diego – The number of worldwide users connecting to the Internet
using Netscape's Navigator browser has dwindled to record lows, falling
even further behind Microsoft's leading Internet Explorer, according to
figures released on Wednesday by San Diego-based WebSideStory's StatMarket
service. As of August 26, Netscape's market share had fallen to just 3.4
percent, down from 13 percent last year, while Microsoft's market share
has climbed from 87 percent a year ago to 96 percent today. The report
found Netscape's market share was higher than the global average in
several countries, including the U.S., Germany and Switzerland. "The
browser war is in fact a massacre," said Geoff Johnston, vice president of
product marketing for StatMarket. "The newest versions of Netscape have
failed to win over users so far. There are pockets of resistance in
certain countries, but unless AOL makes a move soon, Netscape may find
itself battling Opera for the last 1 to 2 percent of the market."
