Ian Wallace and John Roberts in Conversation

WORK invites you to an in conversation between renowned Canadian artist Ian Wallace and art critic John Roberts to celebrate the launch of Ian Wallace: At the Intersection of Painting and Photography, a comprehensive new publication on Wallace’s work by Black Dog Publishing Limited.

Ian Wallace has played an important role in contemporary art over the past 50 years, from his early experiments with minimalism to his production of serial photographic ‘tableaux’ and his subsequent juxtapositions of photography with monochrome painting. A key figure in photoconceptualism alongside Jeff Wall, Rodney Graham and Stan Douglas, Wallace has consistently demonstrated conceptual rigour and aesthetic innovation. Through both his practice and position as social historian, critic and educator, Wallace’s influence extends to film and literature, institutional critique, architecture, urban development, gender relations, environmentalism and civil disobedience.

John Roberts is Professor of Art and Aesthetics at the University of Wolverhampton and an internationally distinguished writer and curator. He
has authored numerous works of critical theory including The Intangibilities of Form and The Necessity of Errors. Roberts is a contributor to Black Dog Publishing’s forthcoming title Contemporary Art in the United Kingdom.
