Michael Mandiberg is an interdisciplinary artist, scholar, and educator. His work explores systems of exchange, ranging from financial markets to the sharing based peer-production of Free Culture. He sold all of his possessions online on Shop Mandiberg, made perfect copies of copies on AfterSherrieLevine.com, and created web browser plugins that highlight the environmental costs of a global economy on TheRealCosts.com. He is the co-author of Digital Foundations and Collaborative Futures, and editor of The Social Media Reader and Educational Outliers. A recipient of fellowships and commissions from Eyebeam, Rhizome.org, and Turbulence.org, his work has been exhibited at the New Museum, Ars Electronica, ZKM, and Transmediale. He directs the New York Arts Practicum, is an Associate Professor at the College of Staten Island/CUNY and is on the Doctoral Faculty at the CUNY Graduate Center. Assistant Professor - Design and Digital Media - CUNY

The Department of Media Culture at the College of Staten Island (CSI) invites applications for a tenure- track position in Design and Digital Media at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning Fall 2015. A generalist with the ability to teach Web Interaction, Gaming, Mobile Media and/or Motion Graphics is preferred. We seek an artist or designer with a committed creative practice and exhibition record, who teaches the how as well as the why. Successful candidates will teach core courses such as Typography and Design, Digital Imaging, and/or Web Design; upper division courses including Web Interaction, Gaming, Mobile Media and/or Motion Graphics; and develop new courses in her or his area of specialization.The successful candidate will work with other departmental concentrations and programs to develop interdisciplinary courses; continue an active creative practice and exhibition program; and perform college service. Shares responsibility for committee and department assignments including administrative, supervisory, and other functions.

The College of Staten Island is a leading publicly funded unit of The City University of New York (CUNY) located in the fastest growing borough of New York City. It is situated on 204 acres of wooded grounds with nineteen buildings constructed in the Georgian style. It is a comprehensive liberal arts and technology institution with a commuter student population. Free shuttle service is offered from the Staten Island Ferry to the CSI Campus.

The school's location in New York City enables it to draw on the vast economic and cultural resources of the city. It also provides opportunities for faculty to interact with practitioners in industry and with researchers at other colleges and universities in the metropolitan area. Opportunities exist to serve on the Doctoral Faculty of The City University of New York Graduate School in various field areas.

The Department of Media Culture values interdisciplinarity, combining theory and practice in its teaching, research and creative pursuits. It offers a BA in Cinema Studies, BS in Communications and MA in Cinema and Media Studies. Our Master's program offers faculty opportunities for seminar teaching and supervision of research and/or production theses.

QUALIFICATIONS

An MFA or equivalent terminal degree in art, design or closely related field is required at time of appointment. A generalist with the ability to teach Web Interaction, Gaming, Mobile Media and/or Motion Graphics is preferred. Applicants should have a minimum of two years of teaching with an ability to communicate theoretical and historical concepts, aesthetic principles and technical skills to a diverse student body.

No worries on the grammar...! Here's some more bad grammar:

I totally understand that they bring support, but isn't it telling that from an economic/structural POV their support brings language that squashes the horizontality of the (small r) rhizome?

And yes, the work that Ben Fino Radin et al are doing is really really important and really ahead of the game. It is taking the work that Jon Ippolito and Christiane Paul were conceptualizing a decade ago, and implementing it on projects that are now artifacts.

I second this thought. Rhizome definitely *formed* a community, which continues to exist (all the usual suspects from RAW are here on this thread), but Rhizome itself is no longer really a community. It is a writer-centered blog, with paid writers. That you called the advertising research poll a "reader survey" is telling. As opposed to a "community survey" or a "members survey."

One other important shift is the emphasis on the archive. The funny thing was that was there from the beginning, but it didn't feel as important. I wanted some of my early work in the Artbase b/c it would lead to viewers. Now, after having reconstructed three three lost projects from Archive.org mirrors, I'm glad they are there b/c I know that at some point my servers will crash or my code will stop working.

Lastly, I want to point out that I found out about this thread from the CRUMB list... which is a kind of case in point.

CUNY/CSI seeks Adjunct Professor

Design and Digital Media program at the College of Staten Island/CUNY is looking for an instructor for COM 320 Motion Graphics, an After Effects class that starts next week.

Description from the catalog: A course focusing on the language and tools of motion graphics. Emphasis is on the construction of image, typography, and accelerated sequences, as well as historical and theoretical topics.

There is a syllabus and textbooks, so much of the prepwork has been done.

The class meets Friday 230-630 at the College of Staten Island.

Social Text dossier on Debt

Debt is arguably the central economic and political issue of our times.  Since the recession triggered by the crisis subprime mortgage crisis in 2008, political economists have spent much time bringing to light the arcane financial instruments (e.g. Collateralized Debt Obligations) that have driven the crisis. Yet relatively little attention has been paid to the questions which debt and credit raise for culture and everyday life.
    To address these key issues of our time, Social Text is publishing a dossier of essays on debt that builds on recent work by Michael Denning and the Yale Working Group on Globalization and Culture.  Questions addressed in the dossier include the cultural meanings of debt in relation to the histories of migration, nation-building and state violence, to discourses around nature and intellectual exchange, as well as to the narrative structures that construct and reframe the meanings of debt in daily life.
    To deepen and extend this discussion, Social Text is issuing a call for visual works relating to the culture(s) of debt. Preference will be given to web videos of less than 5 minutes, though Social Text is also interested in other visual works that can be presented online, such as site-specific Internet based work, short photo essays with or without text, and image based documentation of works.
