Artist Statement

to be Crystal Clear is a light box series, small in size, that references early display cases like the cabinet of curiosity, as well as the most current display cases; the personal computer. The light box contains three main materials that cannot be separated from each other, as they function as a whole. The light panel, the cellophane and the polarizing filters. Together they offer a theatrical experience that is reminiscent of early cabinets of curiosity which was a place for study and wonder.

As an artist, my ongoing interested is in the construct of the digital image. In order to access a new set of contemporary notions related to sight and seeing, I am dissecting the digital image as a physical entity. Polarizing filters is a material that is part of any backlit screen and it is an essential component to the way we see a digital image. In this light box series, I use polarizing filters to elicit colors from clear cellophane.

When light waves, from the LED panel, travel through certain plastics, like cellophane, it bends the light waves into different directions. This refraction can be seen when the cellophane is placed between two polarizing filters, as the light waves produce a spectrum of different colors, depending on the folds made with the plastics.

Like many curiosity cabinets from the Renaissance and today's I-pad, these custom-made light boxes display a theatrical aesthetic that acts as a catalyst to understand the world.
