Luminous Point (2005)

Luminous Point is an investigation of memory and architecture, conceived as an interactive DVD. Navigating per remote control, the viewers roam through a digital recreation of my Lower East Side tenement apartment - a virtual wunderkammer and archive, in which distant places and different times, personal biography and cultural history, fact and fiction all coexist like in the mental space of memory.

Full Description

interactive DVD | ca. 90 minutes of video | 2005 (vers. 1.2 2007)

The artist's home, a Lower East Side tenement apartment, transforms into a virtual wunderkammer, where distant places and different times, personal biography and collective cultural history, fact and fiction all coexist. Traveling back and forth in time, the visitors uncover within the diminutive single bedroom apartment a labyrinth of spaces. Effortlessly changing between microscopic and macroscopic dimensions, they descend into subterranean worlds, lift off skywards like dreamers, free from the binds of gravity and linear time. Luminous Point seamlessly combines video and computer generated material, creating a new form of electronic work, a hybrid composed of elements from narrative and documentary video/film, computer game, virtual reality, and photography.

The online simulation is a partial walk-through that starts with a short demo of the navigation. In an installation setup, pressing LEFT, RIGHT, UP, or DOWN on the remote control makes available hotspots visible as illuminated points. PLAY initiates a transitional movie to the next room.
