These are some of Lee Walton's best projects…

Will someone in NY please get to the 23rd street NRW & give this dude
an orange? :)

Greetings,

At this very moment Rob Bohn is standing on a corner in NYC and desperately
needs your help.

Utilize your vast networks and resources. He is depending on you…

I'm getting ready to head over there, but is anybody closer? It
would take me 45 min or so to get there.

Hi all,

I made it. I had a strange sort of elation when I exited the subway
and saw him still standing there freezing and knowing that I had his
salvation bulging in my coat pocket.

Lee's pieces along this line are a weird sort of flash anti-mob where
only a few 'in-the-know' even know there's art happening. A sly
statement on the 'special' knowledge some contend one needs to
appreciate some forms of contemporary art?

Also we need to coin a phrase for this type of work (MTAA has also
made work along these lines): net.flux anybody?

Hmmm…. I think the term "net.flux" (aside from using the ill-fated
middle-dot–very 1.0:) also requires "'special' knowledge some contend
one needs to appreciate some forms of contemporary art," in order to
be appreciated.

What's wrong with "net performance"? To me, that's what this is & what
MTAA has done, in same/different ways. It's open & clear. And I love
that it points out the fact that the internet can be used in online &
offline performance…

I can feel the heroic excitement you must have felt at seeing the kid.
Did you say something epic to him?

We really need something more catchy. Buzzwords and buzz rhetoric
(like labeling things other than software with version #s) are good
because folks get the meaning and understand them in a way that's
exciting to them. OK, i know, net.flux sounds like some sort of
software you run on your server to clean out viruses or something. But
I see lots of Lee's stuff to be very much based in the particular area
of performance embodied by fluxus.

BTW, does anyone have the flux.us domain yet….?

BTW2, M. mentioned on the mtaa-rr that Lee calls them 'micro performances'

I said "put your coat on." He was really happy to see me and looked
like he was going in for a hug, but at the last minute got
embarrassed. We settled on a handshake.

I actually liked Lee's term for it just fine: web happening

Hi Sal,

Good point.

But I would say that a wappening (web happening) would be a sub-genre
of this larger networked fluxus thing. Maybe we should just call it
Fluxus Praxis v11 (pulled that version # out of my lower hole).

Not to be devils advocate but in this case, isn't the internet/email/blog
just another vehicle for the dissemination and archive of the information
for the performance/happening. Technology now provides us with a quicker way
to get that info out there but is it much different than using the fax,
phone or mail to alert the select public about the act.

I'd be intrigued to see the video of the passers by. Did anyone ask him why?
Was he asking the general public for an orange? I think the piece is cool.

On another note:
Who was it that did public performances at various webcam locations?

I might argue it differently: the community that lee put into motion
with his piece is an internet community. As we all experience daily,
the internet cultivates its own flavors of community, different from
the communities that grow up around books, mail correspondence,
telephone, or fax. Each of these has its own style, scale,
subculture, speed, effectiveness, etc. Most of us move fluidly
through many of these communication communities. It seems to me that
art which makes use of the communities particular to the internet is
as much "internet art" as art which makes use of the algorithmic
capacities of computers connected to the internet.

Hi Sal and all,

"I might argue it differently: the community that lee put into motion

the internet cultivates its own flavors of community, different from the
communities that grow up around books, mail correspondence, telephone,
or fax. Each of these has its own style, scale, subculture, speed,

Really good point…

One of my fave books, which is a bit of a blast from the past but still
a good example of community and its subculture, debates etc is, 'Beneath
the Underground', by Bob Black- an excellent read.

In the book you really get a clear impression of community and sub
communities, and how they may not necessarily be aware of themselves as
communities, yet they are strongly linked (networked) via their
interests, dialogues, passions, cartoons and many things which glue them
together. A best written example of 'marginal press', or 'underground
press' that I have ever read…

When I was first read it, it was around 1996 or 95, about 2 years after
its publication which was around 1994 (It think). It was the time of The
'Next Five Minutes' in Amsterdam and Rotterdam, which was either 95 or
96, can't quite remember- but it was an exciting period for myself, for
I was also writing in certain undeground zines in the UK also, and the
next 5 minutes was representative of the wildness of a fresh Internet
and fresh faces, whom were exploring new creative territories, in
respect of politics, art and networking.

This was also the time when the original list, Syndicate was blooming.
And boklet releases were being received by myself and others, of
collected essays from the list which was exciting as well. Which was
called 'Deep Europe', in fact I have been reading it again lately, it's
also a good read and a fine reference for those who wish to explore the
early days, regarding net art and social networks areound Eastern
Europe, and connected groups from other cultures.
