BILL LUNDBERG

" A pioneer in the field of contemporary film and video installation,
Lundberg has engaged in aesthetic investigations that predate and presage
those of his more notable contemporaries including Gary Hill, Bill Viola,
and Tony Oursler. For over thirty years, Lundberg has integrated the
formalist qualities of painting, performance art, and film to speak to the
human condition. To understand the invaluable contributions of this pioneer,
to position his work within the spectrum of contemporary art practice,
viewers must first experience his illusory presence. Lundberg is a magician

"I am very impressed with the garden. I liked it before (when I saw an
incomplete version), but I think it is much better now. You are one of the
few people in net art who is making "Art" that can stand as Art. I would
expect people who like art to like your works, even if they are not computer
people. As I said when you showed me the incomplete version, this is Art
that fits in the artistic tradition and shows an understanding of art
history and of techniques from other arts. (For example, the photo of the
sinks looks almost Cubist, you have Japanese themes, you have the clay works
which I gather are modern but they seem almost ancient runic in style, you
have Impressionism, etc.) Here you have photographs that look like paintings
(I think they are modified photographs), little animated motifs that are
subtle instead of obvious like most animation, videos which like the
animation are tiny and delicate, rather than gross, and hand drawn motifs
which layer on top of the photo paintings. The sound also adds to the
experience; it is agian subtle, and it highlights the Japanese theme along
with the water sounds. Unlike many other people's sound work, it does not
sound like the soundtrack of a video game! Thus you really use MULTImedia,
only not in a showy way while says "Look what I can do!" but in a way that
makes a unified work, not an assemblage of parts. An interesting aspect of
this work is that is very organic, has smooth edges, gradations of tone,
etc. which is unusual in digital art."
