joe • noun informal 1 and ordinary man. 2 N. Amer. coffee.
(FROM THE COMPACT OXFORD ENGLISH DICTIONARY)

Born on August 29, 1979. Named after a fictional character from tv/movies. And tortured by the seemingly predetermined path such a name suggests. On his 29th birthday, Joe Nanashe will exercise the demons that have haunted him since the first time someone recited the lyrics to Hey Joe in conversation. Joe (A Self-Portrait) is the culmination of 29 months of work combing through 144 films that contain character(s) named Joe. Subjectively edited with the only conceptual constant that the name Joe is spoken somewhere in the clip, what remains are abstract fragments of narrative and characterization, revealing how Joe is constructed from the outside in. The individual is erased. Joe becomes an empty vessel, a shape-shifting mass of banality - an obscure, elusive object of desire.

And in the spirit of the occasion, an extra-special gift awaits those who attend the screenings.
