Matthew Gardiner has created an aura of innovation around his practice simply by following his passion for origami, code, and interactive new media. Graduating in 1997 with a BFA Photography from the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne Australia. Matthew worked and trained in new media under the mentorship of Peter Hennessey and Patricia Piccinini. Working on projects with clients such as Arts Victoria, Chunky Move, Lucy Guerin Company, ACMI, and the City of Melbourne, he developed a solid grounding in programming and strengthening his relationship and love for the arts. His recent works are a hybrid of origami and technology.
In 2005, Gardiner built a full scale Origami House from 1 square km of paper, directed Folding Australia: Australia's first international Origami Convention, toured Oribotics in Belgium and Holland, completed an Australia Council residency in Tokyo where he developed a new generation of light interactive folding robots for Oribotics [laboratory]. Gardiner collaborates with composers, musicians, technicians, and the industrial sector during the creative process. Exhibitions of his work have been shown in Australia, Europe, and Asia.
