BIO
COLL.EO is a collaboration between Colleen Flaherty and Matteo Bittanti

COLL.EO creates media artworks, mobile sculptures, and conceptual pieces. With the use of appropriated materials which are borrowed from a day-to-day context, COLL.EO uses a visual vocabulary that addresses several different artistic, social, and political issues. Their work incorporates time as well as space – a fictional and experiential universe that only emerges bit by bit and piece by piece. The switch between the analog and the digital is simultaneously sudden and subtle.

COLL.EO generates situations in which everyday objects - often toys and games - are altered or detached from their original contexts. Sometimes they appear idiosyncratic and quirky, at other times sinister and morbid, like most by-products of American superabundance and pervasive marketing. By applying specific combinations and certain manipulations, new functions and contexts are created. Through a radically singular approach that is nevertheless inscribed in the contemporary debate, COLL.EO presents and subverts object trouvees while flirting with disasters, namely philosophy, history, and architecture. Pompous writings and utopian designs are juxtaposed with trivial objects. Categories are subtly reversed. New situations emerge. And invevitably collapse. Not post-. Not meta. Not anti. Perhaps counter. As in "over the...".

COLL.EO's works are a drawn reflection upon the art of media art itself. By exaggerating certain formal aspects inherent to contemporary society, COLL.EO often creates work applying creative game tactics, but these are never permissive. Play is a serious matter: in the magic circle different rules apply than in everyday life and even seemingly trivial objects undergo transubstantiation. By merging several incompatible worlds into a new universe, COLL.EO is actively breaking the internets. Not an easy feat in an age of normative Neoliberalism.

COLL.EO currently operates between San Francisco and the deep end.
