A transformative interactive light totem commissioned for WOMAD Taraniki, New Zealand. 2013. This is one of two works designed in collaboration with painter and graphic artist Fane Flaws and interactive designer MULK.
Full Description
By day kids and stooping adults could blow into a microphone at the base section mounted in a bubble wand, creating bubbles in an animation on screen & causing real bubbles to stream from the top! This was only possible every 90 seconds when an animated on-screen bubble wand would rise up and its bubble mix quiver enticingly in a virtual breeze.
By night Meta II reacted to energetic movement captured by a web-cam and turned into kalaedascopic mandala, cycling through different colour and chase states until finally belching smoke from the mouths/eyes of Fane Flaws illustrations at the top.
Invisible masks were printed on the back in-side of the skins, re-framing and defining shapes or characters at night that were invisible by day.
Interior LED lighting and external LED strip-lighting both programmed into interactions served to illuminate the interior and define the angular exterior lines.

Artist Statement
Metamorphosis II is one of two light totems created as interactive hubs in response to an invitation from WOMAD New Zealand to create a pair of welcoming gateway device's. As a light artist frequently working with totemic like structures I wanted to make something monolithic, modular and architectural that could be reconfigured and re-used with different media. Designed with the ability to mount LCD screen's on various levels with-in the trapezoidal square surfaces and skinned in this instance with rear illuminating PVC banner material. The works ability to metamorphosis and change their behavior by day and night was key for this project. Sound, movement and light were all explored through audience interventions with the works. This was a real hit with kids and adults alike!
