Artist Statement

Axis of Power was exhibited at the Sharjah Biennial 9 during the world economic crisis. This period in the context of the United Arab Emirates became an important element to the meaning of the work. 'Axis of Power' reflects the contemporary power structures that pivot the region, the transition of power, and the environmental changes that are occurring. This white monochrome is neither an image nor an object but rather something in-between. Like a scientific specimen, the power of nature appears to have been captured, isolated and objectified within the confines of the room's architectural space. Its spiral form is based on the golden ratio giving the work compositional and geometrical balance. Dwarfing the viewer on a scale as large as a cinema screen 'Axis of Power' forces us to navigate itself in order to explore the interplay between two and three dimensions, and in doing so, situating us within its power relationship.
