Maridian: Visible line of time, distance and separation. (2007)

The interactive installation is designed precisely to invite participants’ experimentation with communication. Through delayed visual performances, users can experience each other's expressive rhythms, as their interaction with the interface actualizes itself onto the surface. As the performance unfolds before the recipient, one can imagine the other’s body acting upon the interface. This defines communication both as process and end-result, complicating the immediacy and disembodied quality of contemporary digital technologies, such as the cellular phone or the email.

The project finds inspiration in the asynchrony found in the technology of letter writing. This is an example of human rhythm and expressive experience that has not yet been recreated with the latest technologies. The art of composing a letter, the process of introspection and use of language, and the system of sending and receiving letters become inspirational elements in contrast with popular technologies in the digital era, opening a space for technological ...

Full Description

The art of composing a letter, the process of introspection and use of language, and the system of sending and receiving letters become inspirational elements in contrast with popular technologies in the digital era, opening a space for technological experimentation in a different direction.

Today’s fast evolving communication technologies strongly tend to systems that are fast, immediate, synchronous. The technology itself tends to minimize size and weight in the physical product. With new technologies, and the formation of new communication behaviors and dynamics, the tendency is to minimize factors relating to time and distance. This reduction in the perception of time and distance shapes and affects the way people communicate with each other, influencing individual expression and the formulation of content.
