Various works: Tongdo Fantasia, Journey to the West, Anonimo Colectivo Mexico, Aucklantis (2007)

The works presented on this site were shot in situ over travels from 2003 - 7. They are stream-of-consciousness monologues arranged into thematic structures. Tongdo Fantasia is a 7 part work shot in South Korea, Journey to the West is a 40 minute ride across China, Anonimo Colectivo Mexico (30 min) was shot in Mexico and Aucklantis (feature length) was shot in my hometown Auckland. Rather than a kind of 'travelogue' or video diary these works are a tableau of associations forming a poetic, epic narrative. The tone is dryly comical and everything is achieved with an economy of means. Besides self-generated themes, the works often allude / refer / pay homage to particular works or bodies of work, especially literary works. The basic conceptual impetus behind my work is the notion of writing by speaking on camera. The process is one of responding to the ordinary things I find ...
