Hitler Meme

By Ceci Moss and John Michael Boling

“The Hitler Meme” or “Hitler finds out” is a video meme involving the addition of new subtitles to the dramatic scene of Hitler’s final meltdown from the German movie Downfall directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel. The subtitles are often anachronistically altered with humorous English subtitles surrounding current events.

The earliest known subtitle spoof of Downfall was uploaded by YouTube user DReaperF4 on August 10th, 2006. Titled “Sim Heil: Der untersim” and subbed in Spanish, the video shows Hitler fuming over the lack of new features in the demo trial of Microsoft’s Flight Simulator X, which was later released in October 2006.

Then on August 30th, DReaperF4 uploaded the English sub version of “Sim Heil” upon popular request in the comments, making the joke accessible to the rest of Flight Sim fans on YouTube. The original YouTube video was deleted upon copyright claim by the film stdio on December 26, 2009, as documented by YouTomb.

This is a very interesting meme. It seems to mock not only the tendency of individuals on the internet to overreact but also the cartoon nature we a sign to Hitler. It also points out that the seeming lack of dramatic scenes of Hitler which we have been presented in the cinema. Of course the movie appears to be German, so perhaps my ignorance stems from my lack of familiarity foreign film. I would also assume however that perhaps this meme rose partly because of the lacks of other clips. A case of art thriving in it's limitation. We can't forget though that these clips are most defiantly, but at the same time we can see the potential for creative commons works to be "advertised" though internet memes. I am certainly much more likely to see this random German movie now that it is a more prevalent part of the culture.

Cowwithastickupyourass, although eloquent enough you display a total ignorance of culture originating from outside the US (which I assume you are from).

It is not a random 'foreign' film. It is a critically acclaimed Oscar nominated film (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0363163/).
It is also one of the best films I have ever seen (and I am not German, only not so frigging narrow-minded as not to ever consume films produced outside of Hollywood (which, by the way 9 times out of 10 produces predictable crap aimed only at not scaring people away from the box office, rendering them devoid of any artistic or entertainment value)).

So, get out of your US comfort zone and see what the majority of the world's population (those outside of the US) are up to.
