A light installation Erwin Redl

September 22–October 23,
Austrian Cultural Institute New York

We are pleased to announce Erwin Redl's light installation "SPATIAL
GRADIENT" at the Austrian Cultural Institute New York, 950 Third
Avenue, 20th Floor, New York, NY 10022 (entrance on 57th Street).

Erwin Redl's work reflects on the artistic condition after the "digital
experience." His formal and structural approach to various media such as
installation, CD-ROM, internet and sound almost requires binary
logic–the material is assembled according to a narrow set of
self-imposed rules often incorporating controlled randomness and other
methods inspired by computer code.

Most recently he investigates the term "reverse engineering" by
re-translating the abstract aesthetic language of virtual reality and
3-D computer modeling back into an architectural space by means of
large-scale light installations.

The installation "Spatial Gradient" is a site-specific project in the
corridor of the Austrian Cultural Institute New York. The long corridor
from the dark entrance to the bright lobby acts as a time axis projected
into the architectural space. This abstract function is emphasized in
Erwin Redl's installation by lighting the space only with a grid of tiny
light sources (LED's). The lights are placed in 21 spatial segments
separated by translucent scrim.

The different hues of perception in these space/time niches and their
relations to each other are the focus of the phenomenological process.
