replying to David Hunt on Maggie Morse

I want to comment about the article printed in the 4.24.98 RHIZOME
DIGEST. It has been a couple of weeks already, and time has gone by
pretty fast–and I have been travelling (continuously). I missed writing
to you about an important point right away, but have continued to think
about the text by David Hunt on the presentation by Maggie Morse.

Basically, I was really shocked that you would print such a bad attitude
text like this. Why? It is not only a bad misunderstanding of Maggie's
contribution to the theoretical media art scene, it is also an arrogant
position for this man to take against her, especially by resorting to
comments about Maggie personally, and her seemingly unsorted delivery.

It reads as if Mr. Hunt felt that he would be a more appropriate
speaker…he has all the answers, after all. And his answers would
certainly be to pull the plug on the whole washtub of digital culture
(which is sooo boring now, isn't it).

You know, maybe Maggie had an off day, maybe she had problems and wasn't
up to speed. I have seen her quite brilliant, and also have been in
situations where she, as others (including myself) were quite ordinary
(or even confused) speakers. All of us have ups and downs.

I honestly feel that you owe Maggie an apology, on-line. We really don't
need this kind of bad mood character asassination, and we don't need to
discredit women who are working tirelessly to bring new and complex
media art information to public attention. If Maggies presentation
wasn't up to Mr. Hunt's extremely informed level, maybe he just didn't
get it becasue he can't follow her way of thinking. He should look a bit
deeper into the variety of references she gives…the topic of digital
bodies and cyber culture is not such a simple case of referencing, after
all.

Will you start a new thread of "fierce attack" from now on? If you are
thinking about this, I suggest that you should at least let the attacked
person have a look first, and prepare a contra opinion to this type of
text.

This is also a very unsorted, but entirely sincere comment from someone
who wasn't there, but who knows the topic and the speaker.
