Artbase 101 - Linked vs. Cloned?

Back to Ranger and Squirrel's initial question about linked vs. cloned
objects in the ArtBase, I can't produce exact figures right now, but there
are definitely more linked objects in the ArtBase than there are cloned
objects. The choice of whether to link or clone a project is left to each
each artist. Maybe linking is more prevalent because the process is
simpler than cloning (which involves uploading the project to Rhizome's
server with Rhizome staff), or in many cases it's likely an ideological
decision. Regardless, linked objects do consist of more than simply URLs.
Each linked object includes a date, extensive metadata, an artist's
statement and biography – all valuable identifying and interpretive
materials. Any linked object in the ArtBase probably will go offline one
day. In my opinion, when a project does eventually go offline, the
textual information left behind, though no substitute for the actual
project, will be more valuable to anyone conducting research than a
defunct URL or a Google search from square one.

Hi all - I just wanted to tack something on to Kevin's last comment. And
that is that I think the ArtBase, however important, should also be
considered a work-in-progress. Over my last two months here getting up to
speed, I've had some good conversations with artists and Members about their
problems or questions with it, and these have been really illuminating for
me in understanding historically how it has been perceived, and also
provided guidance for us (as a staff) to figure out things we need to work
on. I hope people will continue to share feedback on the list or off..

As of this writing, there are 1601 live artworks in the ArtBase. 366 of
them are clones, and 1235 are links.

As regards web services, they're obviously something we're keeping our
eye on, but don't see as a high priority. On my list of things to do
this week, they're probably somewhere in the low 600s.
