As part of MediaNoche’s new exhibition “CINE-REAL” New Media Artist, Hector Canonge, brings to el Barrio, in Spanish Harlem, his much acclaimed interactive installation IDOLatries / IDOLatrías. After its successful presentation at the Bronx Museum of Art, AIM’s Here and Elsewhere Exhibition, where it obtained positive reviews by the New York Times, and its participation in Project Diversity Queens’ Melting Pot Exhibition, IDOLatries will be presented in Manhattan from November 8 to December 20, 2007, at MediaNoche, el Barrio’s New Media Arts non-for profit organization. A talk with the artist is scheduled for Saturday, December 8, 2pm. Free Admissions for all events.

IDOLatries / IDOLatrías, explores the representation of feminine images used on the labels and logos of many Hispanic canned and packaged food products. Canonge declares that “the female archetypes of mother, vamp, saint, or virgin are paired with a products' corresponding commercial barcode label and a visual cinematic narrative which is decoded by the viewer's direct interaction as s/he scans the product.” The installation treats the relationship between established archetypes of female imagery and cultural attitudes of consumption along with universal product codification, UPC, embedded in a product’s barcode label for its commercialization.
