CONVERSATION: Barbara London & Cliff Evans

CONVERSATION between an artist and a curator:
Cliff Evans & Barbara London

Thursday, November 29, 6:30pm
Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Boston

Cliff Evans treats images like found objects, mined from the vast reference library that is today's internet. His new 5-channel video, Empyrean, is a loose narrative around the subjects of power and population control, coded with interesting and humorous subtexts. Barbara London will talk with Evans about his two most recent works The Road to Mount Weather and Empyrean. Empyrean is on view at the Gardner Museum November 9, 2007 - January 13, 2008.

Cliff Evans (b.1977) was an Artist-in-Residence at the Gardner in 2006. He currently lives in New York and Boston and is a professor at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Barbara London founded the Museum of Modern Art's video exhibition program and has guided it over a long pioneering career. As associate curator, her recent activity includes "Automatic Update," an exhibition drawn from the technology of the last decade.

Tickets: Adults $7, Members & Seniors $5, Students FREE. Buy online at http://www.ticketweb.com/t3/sale/SaleEventDetail?dispatch=loadSelectionData&eventId=203944.

A new video projection by Cliff Evans, Empyrean turns a critical eye on contemporary American culture. Using images excerpted from the Internet the artist has created a five-channel animated digital projection which recalls the form of 15th-century northern European altarpieces. Evans challenges the viewer to confront issues of militarism, politics, consumerism and power in our society. Infused with the artist's wry sense of humor and his keen eye for color and juxtaposition, Empyrean is as engaging as it is disquieting.
