A new video projection by Cliff Evans, Empyrean turns a critical eye on contemporary American culture. Using images excerpted from the Internet the artist has created a five-channel animated digital projection which recalls the form of 15th-century northern European altarpieces. Evans challenges the viewer to confront issues of militarism, politics, consumerism and power in our society. Infused with the artist's wry sense of humor and his keen eye for color and juxtaposition, Empyrean is as engaging as it is disquieting.

A 30-year-old artist based in Brooklyn, New York, Cliff Evans is a recent graduate and new faculty member of Boston’s School of the Museum of Fine Arts, and was an Artist-in-Residence at the Gardner Museum in 2006. His digital projections are widely acclaimed for their ingenuity, fusing the recognizable form of contemporary online advertising with the complexity and scale of historic religious paintings.

Throughout the run of the exhibition, Cliff Evans will be joined in the gallery by new media luminaries from Boston and beyond to discuss "Empyrean" in a series of talks. A complete program schedule is available online at http://gardnermuseum.org/calendar/events.asp?filtid=8.
