Planetarium Performances in Providence, RI

alt-SPACE:
AREA C presents live experimental music
at the Cormack Planetarium in Roger Williams Park Providence, RI

AREA C, a Providence-based experimental musician, will stage four live musical, multimedia performances at the Cormack Planetarium in Providence, RI. The shows will take place in April and May, 2007 (see dates below). Each will feature AREA C in collaboration with a different Rhode Island experimental musician, presenting a new body of work that results from their collaborative interaction with the performance space itself.

alt-SPACE was created by AREA C as a way to present experimental & textural electronic music in unique and interesting settings, establishing a dialogue between sound + space where each can influence the other and enhance the overall experience. The Cormack Planetarium is located in the Museum of Natural History in Providence's Roger Williams Park. The musicians and planetarium staff have worked together to create a new display specially for these performances, featuring the celestial displays of it's state-of-the-art Zeiss Star Projector.

About AREA C: Erik Carlson is a composer and musician who performs and records under the name AREA C. His compositions examine the texture and tonal characteristics of sound, working with live loops, their cyclical relationships, and the details of their decay over time. The work blurs boundaries between digital and analog as well as electric and acoustic, foregrounding sound sources from out of the way places. AREA C has releases on various experimental record labels and composes scores for film soundtracks and audio installations. He recently completed an interactive installation titled "Lo Rez / Hi Fi," a collaboration with architect J. Meejin Yoon of MY Studio, which is currently on display at the Cooper-Hewitt Design Museum in New York. Erik is also an architectural designer and has worked extensively with the award-winning architecture firm SINGLE speed DESIGN.
