ON FRIDAY THE 13th "ARTISTS AGAINST FEAR" , A MAJOR TWO DAY ART EVENT ARRIVES AT THE YBOR CIGAR THEATER, TAMPA

INCLUDING- A CONTROVERSIAL NEW SELF DESTRUCTING ROBOTIC ARTWORK CRITICIZING THE HOME-LAND SECURITY DEPARTMENT


Friday the 13th, and Saturday the 14th of April,
Tampa's new hope for an arts community, The Ybor Cigar
Theater, presents a collection of art and performances
by dozens of Florida artists across many disciplines,
all creating 'Art Against Fear'… media and politically induced fear.

The highlight of the show is a rising star in the art
world, David Karave, who brings his cinematic self
destructing robotic art to Tampa.

Karave will present a live performance of a family
of robotic crash test dummies that violently and
musically self-destruct in reaction to the
disintegrating color code threat alerts on their home
TV. The robotic family moves into a symphony of
musical anxiety, as they resort to rhythmically
destroying themselves.

'Home Automation' is not without its element of
controversy. The show's creator, David Karave,
received a generous donation from the US defense
department; he borrowed actual crash test dummies in
order to create the artwork. What the department of
defense did not realize was that 'Home Automation' is
a protest against our country's civilian color code
threat alert system.

According to David Karave, the creator of 'Home
Automation' "We understand that our leaders need a
system of communication, however we protest with all
our hearts, against the home-land security
department's experiment of fear upon us, the civilian
population."

"The home-land security department has informed us of
their objection to the artwork, and I welcome their
input. We hope that they will relieve us of their
propaganda, and we will not back down for a moment,
until they eradicate any and all systems of color
coded fear against us."

'Home Automation' is the culmination of a massive
project, more than 30 artists have collaborated to
create the artwork over three years of dedicated
moulding, casting, programming, script writing, video
mixing, robotics engineering and creation.

Blake Emory, the Cigar Theater Director, is the man
responsible for the emergence of this incredible new
collaborative venue, this great new hope for a Tampa
artists community. The city is long overdue. For 'Art
Against Fear', he will present a breathtaking
performance of fire and swordfighting, along with the
Cigar Theater Crew.

Also in the show, Beth Elkin presents 'Homeland
Buffoonery', workshops and performances of protest
with fellow clown Derek Baxter, under a new form of
activism : clowning and calling for peace while
costumed in army and clown gear. RSVP for the

The great pianist Alex Gendron brings to us his
paranoid futuristic keyboard rhapsodies first in a
collaboration with David Karave, and then once again
in a solo performance.

N.O. Bonzo give us a showcase of her color drenched
apocalyptic neopsychedelic paintings.

Also, presenting at the show will be Rachel Bishop's
'Silent Burning', a performance of video projection
and spoken word on themes of censorship, Erik
Zimmerman's deranged wooden robots, Mark Runge's
beautiful and astounding collages on fear and
innocence, and Desiree D'Alessandro's
installations/sculptures of pharmaceutical artifact
liberation. As well, we will have Angela Dickerson's
paintings of color colliding peace bearing trees,
Digital 3D artist Anthony Cartagena's portraits of his
inhuman army, and Samuel A. Warmack's minimalist
ghostlike worlds of children, loss, and light.
Adrienne Nadeau, Jeff Brian Land and the Cigar Theater
Spoken Word Crew will perform spoken word poetry
against fear. Painter Mary Martinez presents a child's
call for peace… amongst many other artists,
including two massive stories of open studios,
showcasing the Cigar Theater's many ongoing artworks.
