POSITION:
Stetson University invites applications for a full-time tenure-track appointment as Assistant Professor of Art to serve its interdisciplinary Digital Arts program (art, music, computer science) and to join faculty in art, art history, new media, theatre, creative writing, music composition, and visual studies in creating a new approach to undergraduate arts education centered on creative practice.
QUALIFICATIONS:
We seek candidates with experience in teaching undergraduates, expertise in digital video and 3D animation techniques, and active involvement with emerging new media genres such as experimental gaming, generative art, software art, interactivity, and augmented reality. Candidates must have their MFA or equivalent terminal degree and must demonstrate an enthusiasm for interdisciplinary approaches to art, have a grounding in traditional media, and an active engagement with art theory and criticism.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The teaching load is three courses per semester, plus mentoring students on their required Senior Projects. Primary teaching responsibilities will include courses in digital video and 3D animation.  Secondary topics will be based on the candidate's expertise and ideally will include topics such as gaming, mobile technologies, new media performance, graphic design, history of new media, programming for
artists, immersive environments, contemporary art theory, printmaking,
sculpture, or drawing.  The candidate will also be expected to help in
developing courses that will contribute to our new cross-disciplinary program in creative practice.  All faculty are also expected to offer courses to the University’s program of General Education, including offerings in Creative Arts, First Year Seminars, and Junior Seminars.  For more information on our expectations in teaching and scholarship, our tenure policies, and our support for faculty development, please see the Academic Affairs website (http://www.stetson.edu/academicaffairs/newfac.php).
THE DEPARTMENT:
The Digital Arts program (http://www.stetson.edu/diga) was founded in 1996 and brings together faculty and resources from the disciplines of art, computer science and music because we believe the computer makes it easier for artists to move between media and collaborate across specialties. The Art Department (http://www2.stetson.edu/art/) currently supports majors in studio art and digital arts and a minor in art history. With colleagues across the arts and humanities, we are building a robust community of students and faculty who wish to explore the relationships among the arts disciplines and stretch
the boundaries of creative practice and scholarship in the arts.

THE UNIVERSITY:
Founded in 1883, Stetson (http://www.stetson.edu) is a private, selective liberal arts university. The University’s historic campus, located in DeLand, midway between Daytona Beach and Orlando, enrolls 2,100 undergraduates in programs in the Arts & Sciences, Business, and Music.  Stetson has regularly been ranked among the South's best regional universities and was the first private college in Florida to be granted a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. Our professional programs in Business, Education, Music, and Law (at our Gulfport and Tampa
campuses) are highly regarded nationally.  We have recently opened the
Hand Art Center, which houses the University’s collection of works by
German-American modernist, Oscar Bluemner (http://www2.stetson.edu/handartcenter). Stetson University provides an inspiring education, one that engages students with rigorous and creative study and promotes their values of personal and social responsibility.  Our students cultivate their abilities to explore issues, think critically, reason empirically, express persuasively, and connect ideas creatively across their studies and life experiences. Our vibrant community of teacher-scholars nurtures the unique potential of individual students to prepare them to rise to the challenges of
shaping the future, locally, nationally, and globally. The Stetson University community is dedicated to being one of inclusive excellence where people from all backgrounds can live, learn, work and contribute.

THE COMMUNITY:
DeLand is a picturesque residential community of 25,000 located 20 miles west of Daytona Beach and 35 miles northeast of Orlando.  The area offers extensive cultural as well as recreational activities.
