Urban Interfaces v1.
Creating Participatory Spheres through Communication Technologies

New York, January 2005

As part of Queens International 2004 at QUEENS MUSEUM OF ART, Hector Canonge has developed Ciudad Transmobil, a Web-based project designed to integrate wireless devices, the Internet, and the participation of the public to generate narratives direct, real-time observations and experiences of immigrants in New York City. The New Media Installation is on exhibition until February 6, 2005 and the Web component is located at www.ciudadtransmobil.net

Canonge will give a demonstration and host a panel discussion on the potential role of new communication technologies, such as camera mobile phones and PDA’s, in the development of alternative participatory narratives. Guest new media artists Jonah Brucker-Cohen (UMBRELLA.net) and Katherine Moriwaki (Oscillating Windows) will also present and talk about their respective works. Anthony Townsend, Board of Directors at NYCWireless will lead and moderate the dialogue among artists and participant members of the audience.

The event will take place on Saturday, January 22, 2005 from 3:00 to 5:00 PM at the QUEENS MUSEUM OF ART located in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, New York City Building, Queens, NY 11368-3398. For more information call (718) 592-9700x222 or visit www.queensmuseum.org.
